EFF is seeking an IP attorney to join our legal team. Responsibilities will include litigation, public speaking, media outreach, plus legislative and regulatory advocacy, all in connection with a variety of intellectual property and high technology matters.

 

Applicants should have at least four years of copyright litigation experience, with knowledge of at least one other IP specialty (trademark, trade secret, patent), and familiarity with Internet civil liberties and high tech public interest issues.

Candidates should have experience managing litigation including designing overall case strategy as part of a team, managing day-to-day projects and deadlines, and drafting briefs. Good communication skills are essential along with an interest in working with a team of highly motivated lawyers, interns and activists in a hard-working nonprofit environment.

 

Additional essential skills are strong writing and analytical skills as well as the ability to be self-motivated and focused.  Tech savviness a definite plus, however we can teach you the tech as long as you are willing and excited to learn.

Research Associate: Cambridge University

Research Associate (Fixed Term)

We are looking for a post-doctoral researcher, or person with equivalent experience, to undertake research on a two year project on the problems facing print journalism in the digital environment and the prospects for copyright-based solutions. The project is jointly headed by Professor Ian Hargreaves, Professor of Digital Economy at Cardiff University, formerly Editor of The Independent, and author of Digital Opportunity: Intellectual Property and Growth (2011), and Professor Lionel Bently, Director of the Centre for Intellectual Property and Information Law at the University of Cambridge. The researcher will probably be based in Cambridge, associated with the Centre for Intellectual Property and Information Law, whilst developing and drawing on relationships with Cardiff's Centre for Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies. A Cardiff base is also a possibility. The researcher will spend much of the project gaining a deep understanding of how newspapers have been reacting to the challenges and opportunities of the digital environment, and thinking about the potential implications of these changes.

The successful candidate will be a post-doctoral researcher in journalism, history of journalism/news or copyright law, or have equivalent relevant experience. If the candidate has a background in law, he or she will be expected quickly to become familiar with the history, practice and business of print journalism. If the candidate has a background in the history, practice or business of print journalism, he or she will need to obtain quickly a knowledge of copyright law and practice. An ability to interview effectively those in the field is essential to the success of the project. An ability to read and speak French and German would also be an advantage.

The researcher will publish at least three articles, organise workshops and a final conference.

DESCRIPTION: Designed for scholars interested in pursuing academic careers in areas related to CTIC's work, CTIC fellows enjoy faculty access to Penn Law services and full participation in all CTIC events. Fellows receive a full year of funding and will be eligible for renewal for an additional year. Fellows are expected to produce at least one original academic work and to teach one class during each year of funding. Requirements

Qualifications: You will need to be good at taking initiative, thinking independently, writing well and performing sophisticated tasks of a highly sensitive nature which affect the Company's valuable brand names. The successful candidate will possess the following:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience.
  • A lawyer, at least 3-5 years experience as a trademark lawyer with responsibilities on a global trademark portfolio.
  • Prior trademark experience in a law firm or corporate trademark department (the latter is preferred
  • Ability to consistently plan, organize, work independently, think critically, meet deadlines and remain flexible in a multi-task environment.

The IP Fellow works with Prof. Edward Lee, the Director of the Program in Intellectual Property Law, in both teaching and administration. The Fellowship is especially suited for attorneys interested in pursuing a career in law teaching and allows ample time to write an article and attend faculty talks and workshops.  Responsibilities include: co-teaching a graduate LLM seminar on international intellectual property and a summer class on writing a note on intellectual property topics; organizing various conferences, including the annual Supreme Court IP Review (SCIPR); and assisting with various initiatives of the IP Program at Chicago-Kent, including the new Center for Empirical Studies of Intellectual Property (CESIP).
